ABSTRACT:
Mental health is a key component of total health. Perception understands about any aspects with the help of senses. Mental illness is surrounded in the gloom of ignorance, superstition and feeling of mystery. It is related with the disorders of behavior and thinking. Objectives- To assess the perception of community people regarding Mental illness. Find out the view of community people regarding mental illness and association of perception regarding mental illness with selected variables. Methodology - Research approaches adopted for the study was Descriptive approach with non experimental design. Random sampling technique was used to obtain data. The study was conducted from September 2012 to November 2012 at Community health center, Sri Karanpur (Rajasthan). The sample size was 100. Major findings- A total of 100 community people were interviewed regarding mental illness. Mostly participants were male (56%). More than half people had inadequate perception regarding mental illness. The study showed that no significant relationship between variables and perception. Conclusion- The perception regarding mental illness was insufficient among community people. The results describe a need for Community based orientation and awareness programmes are needed about the mental illness.
