ABSTRACT:
Background: Evidences indicate that most of the human success are created in stressful conditions: but high rate of stress would followed by numerous consequences, including mental and physical illnesses, sleep disorders, restlessness, irritability, forgetfulness, abnormal fatigue, reduced individual’s resistance recurrent infections, headaches, poor concentration, memory impairment and reduction in problem solving ability. In general, everyone experience the stress, but students are a group of people who are at the higher risk of stressors. Stress is the major problem faced by School children especially the students who appear for the public examinations. The stress the students face may be from different angles such as, stress from family members, stress from school, pear group and transitional stage of growth and development. As a result the performance level of the student may be affected. Materials and Methods: A quasi-experimental design with two group pretest posttest design was used with the sample sizes of 80, using purposive sampling technique of which 40 were assigned to control group and 40 to experimental group. Academic stress standardized scale was used which consisted of 40 direct statements to assess the effectiveness of Instrumental music among 10th standard students. Results: The findings of the study showed that there was significant reduction in the levels of stress among 10th standard students after rendition of instrumental music. The mean score of the levels of stress during pretest for experimental group 56.4 and the control group 66.8 and mean score of level of stress in posttest for experimental group 49.7 and the control group ware 73.8. The mean reduction in the level of stress was significant. The calculated ‘t’ value is 9.2. There was no association between the level of stress and demographic variables. Conclusion: 10th standard students are at crucial phase where they undergo stress from different areas like transitional stage, parental stress, academic stress and stress from peer group. In this study students had different levels of stress like mild stress and moderate stress. As the 10th standard students came closer to exam, level of stress among experimental group decreased whereas the level of stress among control group increased, which shows that there was a significant reduction of levels of stress among 10th standard students after rendition of instrumental music.
