ABSTRACT:
Background: The nervous system is the master controlling and communication system of the body. Every thought, action and emotion reflects its activity. Its electrical impulses, which are rapid and specific, can cause almost immediate responses. Aging of the brain is a continuous linear process that begins at conception. Two thirds of all people eventually experience some significant loss of mental lucidity and independence as a result of aging. People aged 60 years and older experience significant cognitive decline, including decline in memory, concentration, clarity of thought, focus and judgment with an increase in the onset of several neurological problems. Aim and Objectives: To assess the knowledge regarding Alzheimer diseases among geriatric peoples in selected old age home in Mehsana, To assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding Alzheimer diseases among geriatric peoples in selected old age home in Mehsana, To find out the association between the knowledge regarding Alzheimer diseases among geriatric peoples in selected old age home in Mehsana with their selected demographic variables. 30 geriatric peoples of old age home were selected using Non – probability convenient sampling techniques in unjha taluka of Mehsana District. Methods - A quantitative approach using pre-experimental one group pre-test-post-test design. The structured teaching programme was given to the 30 geriatric peoples of old age home in Mehsana. Self-structured knowledge questionnaire will prepare and used to assess the knowledge regarding Alzheimer diseases. Results: in this study overall the highest percentage in the demographic data including the age group 33.33% (65-69), gender 60% (female), type of family 50% (Nuclear), education status 33.33% (Secondary), Place of living 63.33% (Rural), family history of Alzheimer 60% (Yes). Post-test knowledge mean score (22.06+2.18) was higher than the pre-test knowledge mean score (14.2+1.06). The calculated “T” value (17.37) was greater than the table value (1.98) at 0.05 level of significance. The pre-test and post test mean % is 35.40% and 71.10% and different is 35.70%. So knowledge is increase after the intervention. This indicates that the structured teaching programme is effective in increasing knowledge regarding Alzheimer diseases. Chi-square test to associate the level of knowledge with a selected demographic variable. Conclusion: The finding of the study revealed that structured teaching programme is effective in increasing the knowledge regarding Alzheimer diseases. Recommendations: A study can be carried out to evaluate the efficiency of various teaching strategies like a self-instructional module, pamphlets, leaflets, and computer-assisted instruction on Alzheimer diseases.
