ABSTRACT:
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge and lifestyle practice regarding angina pectoris and its prevention among middle aged adults in selected rural areas of Moodbidri. Objectives of the study : The objectives of the study are to: assess the pre-test knowledge and lifestyle practice score regarding angina pectoris and its prevention. Evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge and lifestyle practice regarding angina pectoris and its prevention. Find out the correlation between knowledge and lifestyle practice regarding angina pectoris and its prevention. Find out the association between pre-test knowledge score and selected demographic variables. Find out the association between pre-test lifestyle practice score and selected demographic variables. Method: An evaluative approach with pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design was adopted in order to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge and lifestyle practice regarding angina pectoris and its prevention among middle aged adults in selected rural areas of Moodbidri. The conceptual framework of the present study is based on change theory model with the concept of pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation/determination, action, maintenance and relapse given by Prochaska, Di Clemente et al 1984. The validation of tool was done by 9 experts. Reliability of structured knowledge questionnaire was established using split half method following Spearman’s Brown Prophecy formulae and of the lifestyle practice rating scale using test retest method following Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Non probability purposive sampling technique was employed to select the sample for the study. The final sample size was 60. Pilot study was conducted to find out the feasibility of the study. Data collected from the sample were analysed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The results of the study showed that the mean percentage post-test knowledge score (84.53%) regarding angina pectoris and its prevention was found to be higher than the mean percentage pre-test knowledge score (39.83%). The mean percentage post-test lifestyle practice score (81.93%) regarding angina pectoris and its prevention was found to be higher than the mean percentage pre-test knowledge score (41.86%).The ‘t’ value computed between mean pre-test and post-test knowledge score was statistically significant(t(cal) = 27.91, table value t(59) = 2.0010, p<0.05) and ‘t’ value computed between mean pre-test and post-test lifestyle practice score was statistically significant(t(cal) = 22.57, table value t(59)=2.0010; p <0.05). This showed that there was significant difference between the mean pre test and post-test knowledge and lifestyle practice score of middle aged adults regarding angina pectoris. This showed that structured teaching program was effective. There was positive correlation between knowledge and lifestyle practice among middle aged adults both in the pre-test (r(cal) = 0.66 table value r(58) = 0.236 p<0.05), and post –test (r(cal) = 0.473 table value r(58) = 0.236 p<0.05). This showed that as the knowledge level increased, the lifestyle practice also improved. There was significant association between pre-test knowledge score and previous information on angina pectoris and its prevention (?2(cal) = 6.331, table value ?2(1) =3.84; p < 0.05) and no significant association with other demographic variables, which showed that knowledge was influenced by the previous information. There was significant association between pre-test lifestyle practice score and previous information on angina pectoris and its prevention (?2(cal) = 7.17, table value ?2(1) =3.84; p < 0.05) and no significant association with other demographic variables, which showed that lifestyle was influenced by the previous information. Interpretation and conclusion: The findings of the study showed that the structured teaching program was effective in all the areas in improving the knowledge and lifestyle practice of middle aged adults of selected rural areas.
