ABSTRACT:
Background: Early suckling at the breast begins with early and frequent maternal and infant contact. All healthy, full-term babies should be dried and placed unwrapped on the mother’s chest for skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth, or as soon as possible in the first few minutes after birth, and held there in an unhurried environment for at least an hour. The main objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the early skin to skin contact and initiation of breastfeeding on duration of third stage of labor among mothers. Method: Research design selected for the present study is Quasi Experimental Research Approach, in which one was experimental group and other was control group. For the present study investigator had selected the 6 CHCs for final data collection by purposive sampling technique. In the present study total 60 samples of mothers were selected, in which 30 samples selected for experimental group and 30 samples were selected for control group. The structured interview schedule planned demographic data and Observational Checklist was made to assess effect of early skin to skin contact and initiation of breastfeeding in terms of duration of third stage of labor. Result: In the experimental group the mean time of duration of third stage of labor was 8.98 min. whereas in the control group mean time was 12.31 min., mean difference was 3.33 between the experimental and control group. Conclusion: there was significant decrease in the duration of third stage of labor after administration of early skin to skin contact and initiation of breastfeeding.
