ABSTRACT:
Dercum's disease (adiposis dolorosa) is an unusual progressive syndrome of unknown etiology characterized by multiple painful lipomas that arise in adult life, most often affecting postmenopausal women who are obese. There are no clear pathological mechanisms known, although it is suspected that there is either a metabolic or autoimmune component involved. A summary of the major clinical symptoms, diagnostic challenges and treatment modalities are also included in this manuscript.
