According to Lazarus and Folkman (1984), coping is defined as “constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage specific external or internal demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the resources of a person”. Coping is a process that is changeable over time and related to the type of situation in which it occurs (Richard S. Lazarus & Folkman, 1984).Assessment of coping within a specified framework related to the cancer, e.g. the period shortly following diagnosis or receiving a particular therapy, has not provided a sufficiently distinct conceptualization (Ahlberg, Ekman, Wallgren, & Gaston-Johansson, 2004; Stanton, Danoff-Burg, & Huggins, 2002). Rather, patients have been asked to complete the coping assessments without reference to any particular stressor. To educate the patients suffering with cancer about the ways of coping with cancer is very important for relieving stress & leading a less painful life. Present study was an evaluative approach with pre-experimental one group pre and post test design. Convenience sampling technique was used to obtain an adequate size of sample. The sample comprised of 50 patients suffering from cancer in a selected hospital of Odisha. A knowledge questionnaire and power point presentation were administered. Mean post test knowledge scores were significantly higher than the mean pre test knowledge scores. After PPT, patients’ knowledge was adequately increased to 88%. There was an improvement in the level of knowledge as tested by paired “t” test. Results were found to be statistically significant (P< 0.05). This study demonstrated that PPT on ways of coping with cancer was effective in improving the knowledge of patients.
