ABSTRACT:
Administration of medicine is one of the greatest responsibilities of a nurse. The staff nurses have less knowledge about the administration of paediatric medications. Present study is aimed to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding administration of paediatric medications among staff nurses in selected hospitals at Mahabubnagar, Telangana. 30 samples were selected using convenient sampling technique. The findings revealed that In regards to knowledge of staff nurses. 22 (73.3%) were under below average knowledge level in pretest whereas in post test were found nil, 8 (26.7%) were under average knowledge level in pretest whereas 9 (30%) were average knowledge level in post test, above average knowledge level in pre test were found nil. whereas 21 (70%) were under above average knowledge level in post test. These differences indicate the structured teaching programe was highly affected in staff nurses hence H1 was accepted.

INTRODUCTION:
Child – A young human being below the age of puberty or below the legal age of majority. Today is children are tomorrow’s citizens and the development of any country or society is based on the bright future of children. They are the tomorrow’s hope for every family.1 A medicines is a substance used in the diagnosis, treatment, cure, relief or prevention of health alternations.
In fact, medications are the primary treatment client associate with restoration of health. Administration of medicine is one of the greatest responsibilities of a nurse. She should see that all medicines are administered so as to obtain best results2. Giving medications to children is a serious responsibility. The need for accuracy in preparing and giving medications to children is even greater than with adult patients. Since the pediatric dose is often relatively small in comparison with the adult dose, a slight mistake in the amount of drug administered represents a greater proportional error. Pediatric nurses are often the gatekeeper of medication administration. Medication administration is a critical skill of the professional nurse, who must understand and follow various steps in the drug administration process to assure patient safety.3 Although this practice is strongly discouraged, in many cases, especially in the pediatric patient, it is the only way to ensure that the patient is receiving adequate nutrition as well as appropriate drug therapy.4 Childrens are at increased risk of medication errors. This is due to a combination of factors including the need for calculation to be performed at all stages of the process.5
NEED FOR THE STUDY:
Each child to whom a medication is administered has five “rights,” which, if adhered to, will prevent most drug errors.6 Giving medications to children is a serious responsibility the need for accuracy in preparing and giving medications to children is even greater than with adult patients.7 Since the data base regarding knowledge and the researchers own experience reveals an inadequate knowledge among the nurses regarding administration of paed iatric medications. Hence the investigator wishes to Effectiveness of structured teaching programme on administration of paed iatric medications among staff nurses and analyzing the effectiveness of a structural teaching programme as a means of imparting education.
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
Effectiveness of structured teaching programme on administration of paed iatric medications among staff nurses working in S.V.S Hospital, Mahabubnagar, Telangana.
OBJECTIVES:
1. To assess the existing knowledge regarding administration of paediatric medications among the staff nurses working in S.V.S Hospital by conducing pre test.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on administration of paediatric medications among staff nurses working in S.V.S Hospital by conducting post test.
3. To determine the relationship between pre and post test knowledge scores regarding administration of paediatric medications among the staff nurses working in S.V.S Hospital with selected demographic variables.
HYPOTHESIS:
H1: There will be significant difference between the pre test and post test knowledge score among staff nurses regarding administration of pediatric medication
H2: There will be significant association between pre test and post testknowledge scores among staff nurses regarding administration of paediatric medications with selected demographical variables.
Evaluative approach was used in this study and pre-experimental research design was adopted for the present study.
The study was undertaken nurses working in S.V.S Hospital in Mahabubnagar Telangana.
Population:
The population consisted of nurses working in S.V.S Hospital in Mahabubnagar Telangana.
Samples:
The population consisted of nurses working in S.V.S Hospital in Mahabubnagar Telangana.
Sample Size:
Sample size was 30 Nurses in this study.
In this study the samples were selected through Convenient sampling techniques.
Inclusion Criteria: Nurses who were
· Staff nurses working in pediatric department at SVS hospital, Mahabubnagar.
· Who are available at the time of data collection.
· Who are willing to participate in the study.
Exclusion Criteria: Nurses who were not
· Staff nurses working other than pediatric department in SVS hospital, Mahabubnagar, Telangana State.
· Who are not willing to participate in the study.
· Who are not available at the time of data collection.
Description of the tool:
The self-administered questionnaire consists of two parts:
Section A: Items related to demographic data (it includes age, gender, religion education status, experience, experience in units’ knowledge of pediatric medication and source of information.
Section B: Items related to administration of pediatric medication.
Items were judged by experts for relevance, clarity and appropriateness. Modifications done as per expert opinion.
Reliability of the Tool:
The reliability of co-efficient of internal consistency was computed by using Cronbach Alpha.
Data Collection Procedure:
Written permission was obtained from ethical committee of svs college Mahabubnagar Telangana prior to data collection. The samples were working nurses in svs hospital Mahabubnagar Telangana and the purpose of the study was explained and obtained informed consent was obtained from nurses.
Plan for data Analysis:
A master data sheet was prepared by the investigator.
Distribution of sample according to socio-demographic variables was analysed by using frequency and percentage distribution.
Mean, mean % median and standard deviation used to analysed pre test and post test knowledge score. chi-square test.was used to find out the association between knowledge scores and socio-demographic variables of nurses working in selected hospital at Mahabubnagar Telangana.
The demographic characteristics of the respondents revealed that
Majority (66.70%) of participants was from the age group of 21-25 years.
Majority of the respondents (63.30%) were female.
Majority (70%) of the participants were Hindu.
Distribution of respondents according to educational qualification shows that majority percentages (46.60%) were G.N.M.
Distribution of respondents according to year of experience revealed that (33%) were from (6-8years).
Distribution of respondents according to present experience in unit revealed that (40%) were NICU
Distribution of respondents according to Source of information revealed that (43.30%) were Staff development programme

RECOMMENDATIONS:
A similar study can be carried out in various settings among staff nurses.
A similar study can be replicated with experimental and control group.
A comparative study can be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of information booklet.
A descriptive study can be conducted to assess the knowledge of staff nurses on administration of paediatric medication.
